Reports from Cairo expect the year 2022 to witness a surge of French military exports to Egypt.
The expected aerial and naval exports will include weapons deals, together with Egypt securing
Transfer of Technology (ToT) agreements with several French defense companies.
Sources close to the situation say that the Egyptian Air Force (EAF) is in talks with Dassault Aviation
for the procurement of additional Rafale fighters, scheduled to be delivered next year.
Moreover, the same sources claim that the Rafale fighters are not the only Egyptian order from
Dassault, as the EAF is also interested in acquiring Virtual Reality (VR) flight trainers and simulators
from the French company.
It was also reported that the EAF is interestingly following the development of the latest Rafale F4
Variant.
However, this variant is not currently ready to be sold to foreign buyers.
On the other hand, talks are ongoing between EAF and the French defense company Safran, for the
procurement of the new generation medium-range air-to-ground missile of type AASM HAMMER
(Highly Agile Modular Munition Extended Range).
Sources claim that Egypt is looking to acquire 60 AASM HAMMER missiles, while the final number
might change, as the details of the talks are still unclear.
On the naval side, Egypt is in talks with the European multinational defense company MBDA to
procure Aster-30 surface-to-air interception missiles, with advanced fire control systems.
The Egyptian Navy considers the Aster-30 interception missiles a key part and a compatible match
with the naval wide area protection system (WAPS) it intends to assemble.
The WAPS is a missile system that provides coverage over a wide area, which the Egyptian Navy will
be installing on their Gowind-class corvettes.
Gowind-class corvettes are already being constructed in Egypt by the Alexandria Shipyard (ASY),
under a ToT agreement with the French defense company and shipbuilder Naval Group.
